About the work: This work described the episode that John Smith had been saved by the princess Pocahontas since he was captured and in the hands of Indians. Pocahontas’s Biography: 1. What is the major in Pocahontas’s life? Matoaka was the beautiful and lively daughter of Powhatan, ruler of the land that the English named Virginia. â€Å"Pocahontas† was her childhood nickname, translated as â€Å"little wanton,† meaning she was playful and hard to control. When she was born, Powhatan sent her mother home to her own village, to raise Pocahontas. That was his custom. When she was about school age, Pocahontas left her mother to live in her father’s capital, with her older brothers and sisters. As they grew up, Powhatan appointed some as chiefs of his other tribes. Pocahontas became her father’s favorite, â€Å"the apple of his eye†. In this new account, his capture included the threat of his own death: â€Å"†¦ at the minute of my execution,† he wrote, â€Å"she [Pocahontas] hazarded the beating out of her own brains to save mine; and not only that, but so prevailed with her father, that I was safely conducted to Jamestown. â€Å"[Eight years later, in his Generall Historie, Smith expanded upon the story. Writing about himself in the third person, he explained that after he was captured and taken to the paramount chief, â€Å"two great stones were brought before Powhatan: then as many as could laid hands on him [Smith], dragged him to them, and thereon laid his head, and being ready with their clubs, to beat out his brains, Pocahontas the Kings dearest daughter, when no entreaty could prevailed, got his head in her arms, and laid her own upon his to save him from death .. When Smith returned, there were only 38 colonists left (out of 104). Pocahontas kept the colonists from starving to death that first winter, by visiting regularly with plenty of food. Pocahontas paid regular visits to her friend Captain John Smith, but in October 1609, she was told that Smith was dead. She stopped visiting after that. The following winter was known as the Starving Time. Actually, Smith wasn’t dead; his leg was badly burned in a gunpowder explosion, and he had returned to England for medical treatment. The colonists thought the death story would work better with the Indians. Several years passed, with no sign of Pocahontas. Ralph Hamor heard that she had married one of Powhatan’s chiefs, named Kocoum. Captain Argyle discovered that Pocahontas was staying with the Patowamekes, and captured her on June 4, 1613, intending to trade her for concessions from Powhatan. Powhatan only met enough of the demands to keep negotiations open. During her captivity, leading colonists worked to convert her to Christianity. One of those colonists, John Rolfe, fell in love with her, and she’s with him. Pocahontas was baptized as a Christian, and married John Rolfe in 1614. Her new name was Lady Rebecca Rolfe. She gave birth to a son, Thomas Rolfe. This marriage created the â€Å"Peace of Pocahontas†, six years of peace between the Jamestown colonists and Powhatan’s tribes. Pocahontas’ life ended on a high note, with a triumphal tour of England (arriving June 3, 1616) as a visiting princess. She visited many important people, including King James and Queen Anne. What specific details of Indian life and Indian nature does the account reveal? Indian life which was decribed by John Smith was familiar with current audiences since they could easily find out many similar characteristics which concerned to Native American on television program, newspapers or history researches. The first thing we could conclude about the Red people was they lived a simple life which closely to the nature as they used almost things made from the environment such as using feathers â€Å"instead of a towel† to dry hand, wearing skinned robe with â€Å"all the tails hanging by† (p. 3). â€Å"Their head and shoulders painted red† and used â€Å"white down of birds† to help t hem more beautiful (p. 43). They seemed not have any idea about tresury metals like gold, diamond which White people were looking for. They only focused on their simple, traditional comunity by using primitive and ancient tools such as â€Å"robes, shoes, bows, arrows†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Moreover, Indian society was different from ours in some specific ways. Equality and justice was emphasized and took stock in each citizen no matter who they were, what their social status was. For example, in John Smith’s work, although Powhatan was the chief King of Red people, he still made â€Å"his own robes, shoes, bows, arrows, pots; lant, hunt, or do any thing so well as the rest† (p. 43). In addition, democracy was the thing which could be revealed and complimented as well. For instance, when John Smith was captured, â€Å"a long consultation was held† between the King, courtiers and other people to make the final decision. Finally, their culture was special and colorful as they often â€Å"disguised† and â€Å"bedecked† themselves with tail, â€Å"white down of bird† (p. 43)†¦ Followed the account, the Indian nature was absolutely rich, wealthy and bounteous. In our group’s work, since we considered that John Smith’s account was veracious and had many similarities to the reality not only in Indian culture which we easily found in television, newspapers, films but also in the detail that Pocahontas had saved his life. There were many researched told this story and proved that Pocahontas used to rescue him such as Pocahontas and Her World (1969) by G. S. Woodward or Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th Edition (2010). Thus, we concluded that there was about 90 percentage of John Smith’s work is true and the rest part might be hyperbolized by his imagine and mannerism. 2. How do you account for the popularity of this story in American legend? The story of Pocahontas is very popular. Almost people in America and also around the world know this. So it really becomes the big inspiration for many people to institute their creation. For example: The very famous picture â€Å"The Baptism of Pocahontas† painted by John Gadsby Chapman in 1840. This explained the characters in the painting, and praised the Jamestown settlers for introducing Christianity to the â€Å"heathen savages. â€Å"[pic] In the 19th century, John Brougham produced a burlesque, Po-ca-hon-tas, or The Gentle Savage. It debuted in 1855 and became an instant hit. Po-ca-hon-tas remained a staple of theatre troupes and blackface minstrel companies for the next 30 years, typically as an afterpiece . He left his English homeland to seek a life of adventure with honor. His leadership quality during crisic was another American trait, optimistic and tolerance. Captain Smith did not have attention to revenge for his partners who was killed by Native Americans. That means he got generosity in his heart. Moreover, he got along with Indian well. Having an appropriate work life balance is also essential to have a healthy lifestyle and a successful career. However, there is a contrast to the usefulness of wok life flexibility as research had found that flexible hours of work life balance is not beneficial. There are various theories that are based on the knowledge of work life scholarships. This includes enrichment, spill over, integration, ecological theories and other theories. These theories give an idea about the advantages and disadvantages of flexibilities of work life over work life balance. The theory of spill over is focused on the spillover of moods, values, behaviors and skills(Boamah and Laschinger 2015). Two interpretations of spill over are found in this case. The first one is positive association between the satisfaction of work and life and values of work and life. The second interpretation is between transferences in whole of behaviors and skills among various domains like fatigues from work place, or when the demand of family interfere the demand of work (Williams et al. 2016). The theory of compensation refers to the efforts involved in having the negative experience in a particular experience when the person have increased effort in positive experience in another domain. There are two categories of the compensation theories; supplemental and reactive. When a person gets insufficient positive experience at work, he pursues it at home. This is known as supplemental compensation (Karlberg and Lvgren 2016). When the positive experiences at home makes up for the negative experiences at work, this is called reactive compensation. It is seen that people who experience negative effect in their family, tends to be more engaged in their work place and they are consistent in their work. The theory of ecology refers to the fact that life and work are joint function of person, process, context, and characteristics of time. It is seen that each function creates an additive effect on the experience of work and life. It is seen that when a person can provide time to both his family and work, he becomes the happiest person on earth (Mellner et al. 2014). The person can focus completely on his career and he do not have to worry about his home and family during office hours. Similarly, when a person provides time to his family and can satisfy the needs of the family members, he feels to complete his duty as a family man. The person does not have to worry about his office work when he stays with his family (Sharma and Nayak 2016). This shows that there exists a relationship between work and life and joint function of these two aspects makes a man happy and he has a healthy relationship in their social, physical and natural environments. Flexibility in working hours means that the employee does not have to arrive and leave his office at the same time. The employee can arrive and leave the office as per his convenience. However, the employee has to finish his work during his stay in office (Stavrou and Ierodiakonou 2015). Flexibility in working hours also refers to completing the work on time and maintaining the decorum of the company even though the person is physically not present in the office (Albertsen et al. 2014). Sometimes, it is seen that the family members of the employee is unwell and the employee has some urgent work in his office. The condition of his family does not permit the employee to leave the person back at home. This would not allow him to play the role of a responsible family man. However, the work at his office is equally important and he cannot afford to betray the trust of the company. Under this situation, if the company provides the person to work from home, it would help the person to play the role of a responsible family men as well as he does not have to betray the trust of his company and do his work from home. This type of flexibility helps the person to be happy as he can provide time to his family as well as can perform his duty towards the office simultaneously (Lewis et al. 2016). Thus, it would help the person to maintain his work life balance and flexibility can be seen as an alternative to the balance between work life. Another aspect of flexibility is that it helps to reduce the stress of a person. Research has shown that providing flexibility in the work arrangements reduces the stress in employees and it helps them to stay fit and healthy (Stavrou and Ierodiakonou 2015). It is also seen that flexibility in work life helps the employees to stay more satisfied with their life, more satisfied with their jobs and experience a better balance between work and life. It is seen that the employees who have flexibility in their work life, have higher fitness of work life than the people do not have the flexibility. Flexibility in work life is seen to have an advantage over its non flexibility part (Wilkinson et al. 2016). It is seen that the people who experience flexibility in work life have more concentration in their work and they are seen to be highly engaged in their work. It is also seen that these people less likely look for a change in their job and enjoy their current job by planning to build a ca reer in their current job. It is also seen that these employees have a better mental health, better overall stress and lower levels of stress. Research has shown that flexibility in the work life provides the worker with more control and choice which helps provides a positive impact on the health of the employee. On conducting a research in this context, it is found that employees who are open to flexibility in their workplace are more creative and they are less likely to have cardio vascular diseases. It is also seen that the employees who have flexibility in their work life can sleep more than the people who do not have flexibility in their workplace (Sharma and Nayak 2016). Flexibility helps the employees to have a better level of health and this helps them to show a better level of creativity at their work place. It also helps the employees to have a better lifestyle behavior and would help to reduce the absentees at their work. The employees tend to have reduced level of stress and work related impairments. They also have better mental health as it is seen that there exist a strong correlation between flexible arrangem ents of work and better status of mental health. Thus, flexibility in work life helps to have a better lifestyle and creativity in work and it could be seen as a replacement to work life balance. Research has shown that flexibility in work life helps to reduce negative spillover. Research had been conducted in this context and according to the Meta analysis of 60 journals that are published across Canada and United States of America, it was seen that employees who have higher level of stress in their jobs or are highly involved in their job and spend most of their time in job tends to have higher level of interference of work with their family life instead of the interference of the family in their job life (Peper et al. 2013). However, employees who have flexibility on their schedule are found to experience lower amount of spillover of their job stress in their family life. Flexibility in the work life also improves the balance in their work and family life as it allows the employees to spend time with their family members whenever the need and they there is less family interference with work and work interference with family (Stavrou and Ierodiakonou 2015). However, it is also seen that there is a negative impact of the flexibility in the work life. Researches have also shown that there is a negative impact of the flexibility at the work place. It is seen that flexibility at work place can do harm to the employees as it encourages the culture of always on and this culture takes a heavy toll on their physic (Sharma and Nayak 2016). Flexibility at work life increases the risk of poor working conditions and can isolate them from various opportunities of career and social networks. It is also seen that flexibility at work place keeps the level of stress hormones at dangerously high level (Lewis et al. 2016). Flexibility also interrupts the body cycle and of the employee and it creates various health issues for the employee. There are various negative impacts of the flexibility at work place. However, the advantages of the flexibility at work life exceed the negative issues. Thus, flexibility at work life can be used to replace work life bal ance. Conclusion It can be concluded that flexibility in the work life have various positive impact on an employee. It is seen that flexibility reduces the stress of an employee, reduces the negative spillover between work and family and increases the positive spillover in the form of financial security of his family and avail various opportunities for personal growth and be a better family member. Flexibility at work life is seen to improve the balance between family life and work life and reduces the conflict of work and family. Flexibility at work life also increases the balance between work and life and the employee gets time to enjoy his personal space. It is seen that flexibility at work life provides a better physical and mental well being to the employee. The employee can focus completely on his work and also provide his best attention to his family members when they need him. Thus, it can be concluded that flexibility in work life can replace the work life balance. Recommendation It is recommended that companies must provide the option of flexibilities in the work life of their employees. This would help them to provide a better work culture to their employees and the employees can provide their best work to the companies. It is recommended that the employees must also avail the option of flexibility in their work life so that they can lead a happy family life and can balance between work life and family life. Euthyphro is described as a religious mystic due to the fact that he has made prophecies that came true after many laughed at him when he described these ideas to others. Euthyphro intends to charge his own father with murder, where the possible outcome could be death. Euthyphro uses the examples of doing what the gods’ do- what Zeus did to Cronos, and Cronos to Uranus. Socrates feels that Euthyphro is very intelligent, and would not seek such a charge if he was not so well informed on piety and impiety. The next part of this assignment is what caused me to read, re-read, and re-read again this story, as I became confused, then more confused, as to what Euthyphro was trying to define to Soc rates. Does he really ever give Socrates the definition of piety and impiety? At first Euthyphro explains that â€Å"What I am doing is pious.†, as he is talking about prosecuting a murderer, his father. But throughout this explanation Socrates turns the tables on Euthyphro, claiming that Euthyphro has yet to prove his father’s actions even constitute an actual murder. Socrates gives Euthyphro another chance to explain the definition, as he feels that was not a valid explanation due to Euthyphro ended up doing nothing more than contradicting himself. Euthypho’s next attempt to define what Socrates is asking, is more what Socrates is looking for, and somewhat more understandable than the, â€Å"it is what I do† response he previous tried to convey. Euthyphro states, â€Å"Piety, then, is which is dear to the Gods, and impiety is that which is not dear to them.† Socrates now brings up that Euthyphro has already spoke about the Gods and their disagreements among themselves as to what may please one God may not please another God, what is dear to one could possibly not be dear to another, and what may displease one God would please the next. With Gods that have many disputes with one another, Socrates again does not have to refute what Euthyphro says, because again Euthyphro refutes himself with his own definition. On his third attempt Euthyphro suggests,† that what all Gods love is pious and holy, and the opposite which they all hate is impious. Socrates refutation is clearly said to the effects of, just because you love something holy does not explain why that is holy, only that whatever it is, is loved. Being holy because something is loved by all gods still does not tell you what that something is, or why it is holy. In the workplace, managers abuse their positions of authority in order to make their subordinates submit to their unfair labor practices and use it as leverage to have their way with their various employees. Intimidation in exchange for benefits seems to be the norm these days in most offices. The employees are afraid to file formal complaints mainly because they are afraid to lose their jobs. Although we already have laws in place to prevent such abuses both socially and professionally, not everyone knows about their rights and the laws against intimidation. That is why it continues to flourish. I fully intend to help promote the laws against intimidation as set out by the laws of our state and constitution once I complete my legal studies.
